Our Teaching on the Lord's Supper
The Lord's Supper at Lord of Life Lutheran Church is joyfully celebrated in accordance with the teachings of the Bible and the Lutheran confessions. When we stand before the Altar for Communion, we are making public witness to the Christian faith.* * The Pastor will be glad to discuss these or other matters of the Christian faith with you. We Believe...All have sinned and are in need of God's gracious forgiveness. All, therefore, need to examine themselves and confess their sins before the Lord. (Isaiah 59:12, Romans 6:23, 1 John 1:6 - 2:2, 1 Corinthians 11:28) Our Lord empowered and commanded His followers to declare and share the forgiveness of sins to those who repent and confess Jesus Christ as their Savior. (Matthew 18:18, John 20:23) Forgiveness of sins is assured to penitent sinners through Confession and Absolution and through the Sacrament of The Lord's Supper. (Matthew 26:26-28) We receive the very body and blood of Christ with the bread and wine when we receive the Sacrament of the Altar. (Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20, John 6:52-56, I Corinthians 10:16-17, and 11:23-26) Eating and drinking this Holy Food unworthily (that is, frivolously, in disbelief, or in a state of impenitence for sin) is a grave danger to life and faith. (I Corinthians 11:23-29) The Lord's Supper is a family meal of Baptized Christians who confess the same faith in the One Triune God. (Ephesians 4:3-6) Guidance for all Christians desiring to participate in The Lord's SupperDo you earnestly desire to receive the Sacrament of The Lord's Supper? Have you searched your heart, admitted your sins, and confessed them to the all-knowing and all-powerful God of us all? Do you truly believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again so that through your personal faith in Him, you are completely forgiven of all your sins? Do you believe that you will receive the body and blood of Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of your sins and the strengthening of your faith? Do you desire to live a new life under the forgiveness and power of Jesus Christ?
If you have answered YES to these questions by faith, and hold a common Christian faith with us, we joyfully welcome you to the Lord's Table to receive the precious Gift of Himself through the bread and wine. If you have answered NO or DON'T KNOW to any of these questions, please speak with the Pastor before taking the Lord's Supper for the first time. It is with Christian Love that we request this, out of care for your spiritual well-being. Please join us in prayer, meditation, and singing during the Celebration of the Lord's Supper. Pray for us, as we will pray for you.
