Verse of the Day
Something to think about . . . It seems like, lately, many of our Christian life and family values are under assault in the media or public square. Whether it is the role of mothers raising their children, the sanctity and proscription for monogamous marriage between a husband or wife, the avoidance of pre-marital sexual relationships, or the practice of honest business or financial ethics, it seems as if common sense godliness is the exception not the rule anymore.
This should not surprise us. Paul tells us, as this New Testament era wanes and as we await the return of Christ, we will face more and more belligerent ungodly behavior: But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. (2 Tim 3: 1-5) It is not that Christians cloister themselves in monasteries like believers of ancient times did in an attempt to run away from the world. Rather, we learn to live out our witness in the midst of it. Light shines the brightest in the darkest of places.
To do that, however, you cannot go it alone on your own strength. It requires being in the Word to stay grounded. Be around other believers, weekly, so that you will stay accountable and won’t deceive yourselves into a self-made, hollow religion. It means being humble and prayerful, knowing that you will need all of the Lord’s fire-power and support to withstand the evil day.
Don’t despair and don’t give up. It is just more confirmation that the end draws near and that your salvation is nearer to you now than when you first came to faith (Roman 13:11) When you have withstood and stood fast, God will reward your faithfulness both now and later in heaven. So focus on that rather than the bad news of the day. . . Now that’s something to think about!
